SPOKES & SKILLS
Spokes & Skills is a youth cycling program created by the Lawrence Hopewell Trail in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County. Designed for middle school-aged youth, the program teaches participants the skills and confidence to ride safely while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and a lifelong love of cycling. The program runs at no cost to participants or their families.
Spokes & Skills welcomes youth of all experience levels, including many participants who have never ridden a bike before. Over six interactive sessions, students build foundational riding skills alongside bike safety fundamentals, proper helmet use and head safety, trail and road etiquette, basic bicycle maintenance, and traffic awareness. Each lesson combines hands-on instruction from trained volunteers with supervised group rides, allowing participants to put their new skills into practice in a fun, supportive environment.
As their confidence grows each week, participants progress from their first ride to completing group rides of five miles or more, culminating in a celebratory graduation ride.
Thanks to the generosity of our partners and supporters, every participant receives a properly fitted bicycle and helmet to keep, removing barriers that often prevent young people from enjoying the lifelong benefits of cycling.
Spokes & Skills is made possible through partnerships with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County, the Bike Exchange, the Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association (GMTMA), Capital Health, and a dedicated team of volunteers who share their time and expertise with the next generation of riders.
Together, we’re building safer cyclists, healthier communities, and creating opportunities for youth to experience the freedom and joy of riding a bike.
Support the Program
Help us put more kids on bikes!
Spokes & Skills depends on the generosity of our community to ensure every participant has access to a safe, reliable bicycle. There are several ways you can support the program:
Donate a Used Youth Bike
We are always looking for youth-sized bikes in any condition to support our Spokes & Skills participants. Bikes can be dropped off at the Bike Exchange, where they will be refurbished if needed and prepared for the program. The Bike Exchange also accepts used bikes of any size or condition year-round. By donating or purchasing a refurbished bike, you’re helping support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County.
Donate a New Bike
Interested in donating a new youth bicycle? We’d love to hear from you! Please email claire@lhtrail.org so we can coordinate the purchase and pickup of bikes.
Make a Financial Contribution
Monetary donations help us purchase bicycles, helmets, tools, safety equipment, and other program supplies that make Spokes & Skills possible. Every gift directly supports local youth and helps remove barriers to learning how to ride safely and confidently.
Volunteer
Our volunteers are the heart of Spokes & Skills. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or simply enjoy working with young people, we’d love to have you join our team. Volunteers help teach riding skills, encourage participants, assist with group rides, fit helmets, and support program activities. No teaching experience is required—just enthusiasm, patience, and a willingness to help kids build confidence on two wheels.
Thank you for helping us create the next generation of safe, confident cyclists!
Thank you for your support!
