Alan Hershey has been an LHT Trustee since 2014, and Treasurer since 2016. He joined the Board after a long career in public policy research, mostly at Mathematica Policy Research, where he designed and directed national studies testing social programs to help low-income, disadvantaged populations improve their employment, education, health, and relationships. As LHT Treasurer, he has worked to put the organization on a well-managed financial footing. That has involved him as well in development fund-raising. He hold degrees from Amherst College and Princeton University. Alan’s long interest in the outdoors has shaped much of his life. He served for over 30 years as a Trustee and eventually Board Chair of D&R Greenway Land Trust, where he spearheaded creation of the NJ Trails Association to create an online regional trails guide (njtrails.org) and for 25 years has led crews of volunteers building hiking trails. He has a long history of wandering around the world—backpacking in high mountains in the West, biking in France, ski-trekking in northern Scandinavia, and just rambling around New Jersey—where he lives happily with his wife Phyllis Frakt.
