Many sections of the LHT in Mercer Meadow (Mercer Park Northwest) are complete. Phase 3 hopes to start soon.

Carson Road Woods is nearly complete and is walkable throughout, and rideable with a mountain bike. Some sections of the trail still need to be packed down. And then continue on to check out the beautiful new adjacent section at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Lawrenceville Campus.

If you go, please park at Carson Road Woods, or the larger lots at Educational Testing Service, where the LHT continues. Happy trails and Happy New Year from all of us at the LHT.

The reddish brown stone dust trail begins at a small parking lot on Carson Road in Lawrence Township, just opposite the northern edge of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Lawrenceville campus. The trail follows the woodline at first before turning and going deeper into the park. At present, the trail goes back about three-quarters of a mile. Construction of the remaining LHT segment has begun and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2011. If you are visiting the park, there are also other hiking trails meandering through the woods, some are wood chip and others are simply mowed or traditional earthen trails.

Construction of the connecting segment across Carson Road at Bristol-Myers Squibb is expected to begin in August, 2011. THis trail segment will wind through the trees away from the road along the border of Bristol-Myers Squibb until the end of their property near Province Line Road and Route 206.

Get outside and ride the trail!

Help us celebrate Mother Nature and the arrival of spring with a walk on the Lawrence Hopewell Trail (LHT) in Hopewell Township, Saturday, April 30, 2011.

The LHT and Hopewell Valley Senior Services have teamed up to co-sponsor “A Trail for Everyone,” a walk on the Bristol-Myers Squibb and Stony Brook Millstone Watershed sections of the LHT on April 30th, 10-11:30am. The walk will take place on an ADA accessible path.

Residents of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come out and enjoy a flat, paved surface that takes you past scenic farmland and shaded woods. Perfect for people using wheelchairs, toddlers in strollers, or anyone who might benefit from walking on a smoother path.

No registration is required for the event, but carpooling is strongly encouraged. Limited parking is available at Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Hopewell campus off of Pennington-Rocky Hill Road. Group will meet in the parking lot prior to walk.

For more information contact Hopewell Valley Senior Services at 737-0605, ext. 692, or Lawrence Hopewell Trail at info@lhtrail.org. This event is part of Hopewell Valley Come Outside and Play!, which was designed to increase awareness of nature and an appreciation of time spent outdoors.

Come Outside and Play! will wrap up a series of public events with a picnic in Rosedale Park, right after the walk, on April 30th at noon.

The Ewing Public Education Foundation (EPEF) has donated a bench on the LHT in Village Park (Lawrenceville, NJ) in honor of Eleanor V. Horne’s many years of extraordinary service to the community. Eleanor is the Co-President of the LHT.

Eleanor recently retired from her position as Vice President for Social Investment at ETS, and is a well-known and popular advocate for a number of causes and local charities: education foundations, conservation and environmental groups, programs helping the homeless, and the LHT.

The new bench is located in Village Park between Gordon Avenue and Keefe Road.

How to find the new bench and enjoy it: Enter Village Park from Gordon Avenue. (Follow Gordon Avenue until it ends.) Park in the lot closest to the freshly-paved path. (This path is a portion of the LHT.) Proceed down the Trail in the direction of Keefe Road about 50 yards. The bench is on the left side of the Trail, just prior to the bridge and stream.
